First performed during Butter & Grit’s America’s Got Talent journey, “God Knew” quickly became a breakout song for the duo, climbing into the Top 15 on the U.S. iTunes Pop chart and Top 50 All-Genre. At its heart, “God Knew” is a song about the kind of love that feels bigger than coincidence; finding the person you didn’t know you were waiting for and realizing maybe someone knew exactly what you needed all along.

BRAND PARTNERS & SUPPORTERS
Butter & Grit is a Nashville-based genre-less duo and Top 5 America’s Got Talent Season 21 Quarterfinalist known for original music, honest storytelling, and a connection that feels just as at home on a national television stage as it does in the rooms where their story began.
Made up of Dove Award-winning, Grammy-nominated songwriter, producer, and powerhouse vocalist Laurel Taylor and soulful vocalist Luke Michael, Butter & Grit brings together two distinctly different voices and backgrounds to create something entirely their own — blending elements of soul, country, gospel, blues, rock, and hip-hop without being defined by any one of them.
Their story began with a song.
Luke and Laurel first crossed paths through Nashville’s songwriting community, and what started as two artists with separate careers quickly became something neither of them expected. Their voices fit. Their stories fit. And the songs they were writing together began connecting with people in a way that made it clear Butter & Grit was bigger than a collaboration.
In 2026, that music took them to Season 21 of America’s Got Talent. Butter & Grit walked onto the AGT stage with an original song, “Sweet South,” earning four yeses and an unexpected collaboration with Cracker Barrel following Simon Cowell’s memorable comment during their audition. They later traveled to Mel B’s home in Leeds, England, where they performed another original, “God Knew,” and earned their place in the Live Shows.
Butter & Grit ultimately finished in the Top 5 of their Quarterfinal after performing “That’s Okay” live for millions of viewers, completing an AGT run built entirely around original music.
And the response didn’t stop when the cameras did.
“God Knew” climbed into the Top 15 on the U.S. iTunes Pop chart and Top 50 All-Genre, while “That’s Okay” broke into the Top 5 iTunes New Songs, Top 50 on the U.S. iTunes All-Genre chart and began charting internationally.
But long before national television and chart numbers, Butter & Grit was built around taking music somewhere it could matter.
Luke and Laurel have carried their original songs into prisons, recovery centers, veteran communities, hospice, and other places where people are too often overlooked. Those rooms shaped the way they write, the way they perform, and the kind of career they want to build.
The stages may be getting bigger, but the mission hasn’t changed.
Butter & Grit is building what comes next the same way they got here: original songs, honest stories, and music that meets people exactly where they are.
